How To Use A Hookah - 5 Steps To Setup a Hookah

Learn How Setup & Use A Hookah Properly

So you just bought a brand new hookah & it is your first time attempting to assemble a hookah! If you are new to the process you are probably asking yourself how to use a hookah and how does a hookah work. To setup & use a hookah is much simpler than you think. We are going to give you a step by step guide on how to go about assembling your hookah correctly & of course a rundown on how to use a hookah for an optimal experience including thick smoke & smooth flavour. Follow the steps below to properly set up your pipe!

1 - How Do You Setup a Hookah Bowl?

Your hookah bowl is the most vital part of your hookah setup. Properly packing & preparing a shisha bowl will be important to reaching the best outcome for your smoke session. Depending on which hookah bowl you have purchased, packing methods may vary but today we shall discuss the universal method in order to smoke hookah at its best.

Whether you are using shisha tobacco or herbal molasses the universal method of packing your hookah head is by simply sprinkling your shisha into the groves of the bowl so that it reaches just beneath the rim by a millimetre. You want to ensure that the shisha flavour is not packed down densely for this method so that you allow airflow for heat to circulate within the bowl for a proper bake. You also want to make sure that the shisha tobacco does not clog up the interior vents of the hookah bowl so that when you inhale you get a smooth hit of smoke. Clogging the air vents within the bowl will restrict your airflow and make your hookah smoke sessions restricted & harsh. Doing this correctly will be the best way to setup and pack hookah bowl for thick smoke.

Now that you have your hookah bowl setup & packed you may add your tinfoil. Ensure that when you wrap your tinfoil onto your bowl that it is completely sealed tight around the edges of your bowl so that the final result is a drum like surface. For best results use Heavy Duty foil as it tends to be a lot thicker than the standard type of tinfoil and makes a huge difference in hookah heat management preventing you from scorching your session. Ensure that the heavy duty aluminum foil is food safe to avoid hookah danger of inhaling toxic chemicals. For best results, use the tin foil shiny side up method for your hookah session.

Now the fun part begins! Grab a tooth pick & start poking holes in your foil. This will allow the heat from your charcoal to transfer to your shisha for smoke production. You want just enough holes poked in your hookah foil (Not to many but not to little) so that your heat is evenly distributed & not over heating your shisha. Once you have completed packing & loading your hookah bowl you can move on to the next step of the set up a shisha tutorial.

2- Hookah Stem Assembly

Your hookah stem is what carries the shisha bowl, hookah tray and hookah hose. In this step we are going to ensure that your stem is setup & ready to assemble with the various hookah seals associated with your setup.

  • Attach your Hookah base grommet: With your complete hookah setup you will notice a rubber gasket stem seal that is larger than the various grommets for your pipe. This is your glass base grommet/ gasket which allows you to attach your hookah stem to your glass hookah base for an air tight seal. This part is vital since it attaches to your shisha base and seals the hookah all together allowing air restriction for your hookah to work properly. Simply take the base grommet piece up from the bottom of the hookah stem and ensure it attaches to the chamber of the shisha pipe stem. The chamber of the hookah stem is what sits on your glass base and features two holes at the bottom.
  • Attach your Hookah Bowl Grommet: The shisha bowl grommet is what seals your hookah head to your stem. Simply attach your bowl grommet to the top of your stem. This gasket is generally larger than your shisha hose port gasket.
  • Attach Your Hookah Hose Grommet: Simply insert the final gasket that is included with your hookah setup into your hose port. This will seal your hose so that there are no air leaks.
  • Check your purge air valve port: Your purge valve port will be on the opposite side of the hose port. This hookah part screws off and inserted inside is an air valve ball bearing. Ensure this ball bearing is inserted as this allows restriction for you to inhale with your hose.

3 – Fill Up Your Hookah Base With Correct Water Level

Filling up your base with the proper water level is important but also pretty simple. Run your glass hookah base under cool tap water so that it fills up just under the midway point. This is the fun part where we properly measure the water level. Grab your stem and insert into your base to measure the level of water. Your H20 level should be just about an inch over the bottom opening of your stem. This will give the proper amount of air space into your glass base so that your session stays unrestricted & will smoke pleasantly. If the hookah base water level is too high, you will have to pour some out otherwise water & moisture will enter into your hose & purge ports. If the water level of your hookah base does not reach the hookah stem, no smoke will be generated so ensure that the water level is just above the end of the stem by an inch for the best results.

4 – Assemble Hookah Parts

Now that we have your hookah bowl packed & loaded, your shisha stem rubbered up & your glass base filled with the right amount of water, it is time to put the hookah pieces together.

  • Insert Hookah Stem Into Glass Hookah Base: Make sure the hookah stem is tightly sealed into the shisha base.
  • Add Hookah Tray to the Shisha Pipe Stem: Simply place your tray over the bowl port so that it sits on the tray mount.
  • Attach The Hookah Bowl: Attach the shisha bowl to the male bowl port where we added the shisha bowl gasket. The gasket should ensure that your bowl does not wobble and that there are no air leaks. Make sure the nargile bowl is properly mounted.
  • Attach your Hookah Hose: Attach your hose to the hose port. The hose gasket should ensure that the hose is firmly gripped once inserted and will prevent air from escaping your base.

5 – Light Hookah Charcoal & Smoke Shisha

Now for the final & fun part. Light hookah charcoal by placing 2 or 3 briquettes onto a single coil burner or stove. Make sure that hookah charcoals are fully lit .Do not rush this process as you want to avoid inhaling any chemicals or toxins. Hookah coals be completely amber red before use. It usually take 5-8 minutes for charcoal to be completely read before use. Once you have your hookah coals lit, allow the hookah coals come down in temperature by leaving them in your tray for a couple of minutes so that they do not end up scorching your shisha bowl as soon as you add them on. Once that has been complete, place the coals onto the packed hookah bowl. Allow 2- 5 minutes for the shisha bowl to heat up before smoking so that the shisha head achieves a balanced temperature. And now for the fun part, take a puff & enjoy! We hope this tutorial helped you setup & use a hookah properly!
